Under the lights on a cold Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm, not always the desirable fixture, as players are already thinking about a cosy Sunday roast, and eeking out the last moments before another week of school. A slight overrun from the earlier fixtures also meant for a limited warm up, though the tactical discussion prior to the game from the head coach seemed to do wonders as Ashford embarked on their best game yet.
Training has regularly been about possession and press. Protect the ball, press as a team, pass decisively, and we should do ok. Well, we did better than ok. With Maya returning from injury to help promote defence to attack through the wide midfield, Charlotte switching to the right and showing she was born to play there, Josie Wood maybe surprised to be put in defence and yet proving it could be the best switch since Sol Campbell dropped from striker to central defence back in the '90s, which freed Holly and Isla to have more presence in more advanced positions.
Every player was flying, and if we were ever going to wonder where the goals might come from.......BANG! Darcy bustled into the game with a storming performance and bagged a hatful. Daisy contributed, young Bronwyn put one in and Charlotte crashed a ball into the defence after a fleet footed rush down the wing and after pinging off sticks and limbs there were absolute "limbs" in celebration.
6-0 seems like a one-sided affair. It was as clear cut as that, as these games rarely are, but it was absolutely deserved, a brilliant team performance, and despite games in hand that may alter the table in the weeks ahead, don't they always say top of the table at Christmas is key?
